If you have ever had the misfortune to drive along the Western Ring Road, you may have noticed the inconsistent provision of lanes along the way: one minute you have four lanes to pick between, then all of a sudden you are forced back to just two. So what gives?

When wiewed on a map the Western Ring Road looks just like the name suggests – a ring around the middle suburbs of Melbourne, except for a major kink to the west around Ardeer. So why does the freeway take such a sudden turn in that area?

Melbourne has the largest freeway network of any Australian city, and with it, possibly the country’s largest collection of ‘ghost ramps’ – pieces of freeway that lead nowhere. So how many are there?

Speed cameras: on Melbourne’s freeway network you normally find them hiding behind bridges or hanging from overhead sign gantries, but on the Monash Freeway a different type of speed camera has been installed.
