Here’s a quick one – Melbourne trains as featured in music videos.

Gerling – ‘Dust Me Selecta’ (2001)

A guy goes running down the stairs at Flagstaff station and boards a Hitachi train, where he finds a set of magical headphones that turn the train into a nightclub.

The Living End – ‘All Torn Down’ (1998)

The band rock out in front of 1990s Melbourne scenes like the wasteland that is Melbourne Dockland, and the railway yards that became Federation Square.

Phrase ft. Mystro – ‘Here Now’ (2005)

Rapping onboard Hitachi carriages 13M and 1938T at the Brooklyn tip before they got turned into scrap metal.

And a bonus one: Shannon Noll – What About Me (2004)

Another music video from the same time period, this time it features an 81 class diesel locomotive leading a grain train in country New South Wales.

Fun fact

The interior shots of Gerling’s ‘Dust Me Selecta’ music video were actually filmed onboard a Harris train at the Newport Railway Museum.

Last month I shared a film showing Queen Elizabeth II paying a visit to Museum station and the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop, but today I’ve got someone quite different – the 1980s Australian new wave band ‘Kids in the Kitchen‘, in the music video for their 1983 debut single ‘Change in Mood‘.

The first sighting is the circular staircase connecting Queen Elizabeth Plaza to Museum Station, looking south towards Coops Shot Tower and Myer House.

The next shot switches to the other side of the staircase, now looking back towards La Trobe Street. Visible in the background are a number of circular ventilation stacks, now part of the Melbourne Central complex.

The third shot is looking east on the bluestone laneway of Knox Place, looking towards Swanston Street. This pathway still exists today in the shopping centre, as an open area arcade lined by take away foot outlets.

And finally, we looking back along Knox Place towards Elizabeth Street, at the lower floors of the Shot Tower. This area is now enclosed by the shopping centre.

Here is an annotated aerial view of Queen Elizabeth Plaza, showing the camera angles in the music video.

And here is the full music video for ‘Change in Mood’ by Kids in the Kitchen – from the 60 second mark Museum station features.

On Flickr you can find more 1980s photos of Museum station by Graeme Butler, including one of the red spiral staircase as featured in the music video.

I then started a hunt to find out where exactly it was filmed. One article named a station:

Filmed in the The Fordham Metro-North Railroad station

But it looks like they got their tracks crossed – Fordham station on the Metro-North Railroad doesn’t look like a subway station at all.

But a closer look at the music video shows they got one thing right – Fordham Road was the name of the station.

The Avalanches - Because I'm Me at Fordham Road station

A check of Google shows that there are actually three stations called ‘Fordham’ in New York.

Stations called Fordham in New York

These being…

So which station is it?

The Avalanches - Because I'm Me on the B and D train

Riding the B and D train – Fordham Road station on the IND Concourse Line.

Here is the complete music video.

As well as some details about the production.

Footnote

Wikipedia has this to say on Fordham Road station:

Fordham Road is the largest station on the Concourse Line in terms of space, as it contains numerous closed stairs and passageways.

While over at SubwayNut.com:

Fordham Road/Grand Concourse definitely goes in the category of unique subway stations, the three track two platform express station is huge in various ways.

The scale of the station may explain why it was chosen as the setting for this music video – it was easy to get permission to close off some of that empty space during production.

I spotted something interesting in a Hunters & Collectors music video the other week – St Kilda railway station.

Hunters & Collectors - Talking To A Stranger video clip, St Kilda railway station 1

The clip is for their 1982 single ‘Talking to a Stranger’.

The video starts with a man walking down the tracks.

He clambers up onto the platform.

Strolls down the train shed.

Then takes a seat, blowing the dust off his briefcase.

Which then leads into the music video itself.

Despite the empty look of station featured in the music video, in 1982 St Kilda still had an active train service – conversion of the line to the route 96 tram didn’t take place until 1987.

Maybe the filming was completed during one of the frequent rail strikes that delayed commuters throughout the early 1980s?

Footnote

Visible in the second screencap is the text STK902 – the identification marker for the signal controlling citybound trains departing the platform. You can see the same signal in this diagram from 1981.
