Thanks for the update Neal. There seems to be new stuff showing up on Trove every time I look!

G. Goetz History blog which you reference above, about the date of renaming of Franklin St to Batman St, based on The Age articles you found at Trove. Also clarified renumbering of the W. G. Goetz premises in Queen Street, which happened during the last few months of 1888 when the city council overhauled all the street numbers of the Melbourne CBD and some surrounding areas. I know this doesn’t have much to do with the signal box, but every little tid-bit of history info helps! I’m also a rail fan, so find all this very interesting. Thanks Marcus.

Good question regarding the statue – it remained in place in the fenced off forecourt at 447 Collins Street, but right now the entire area is just a big hole in the ground.

With the building now demolished, I wonder what happened to it, and if it will be restored (or will it be shipped off to a park for unsavoury statues?).

Batman Avenue was named Yarra Bank Rd in that 1920 street directory.

Flinders Street Station have five signal boxes – ‘A’ in the west through ‘E’ in the west.

The box that burnt down was Flinders Street ‘A’ – since rebuilt as a youth arts centre.

It was destroyed by fire some time in the late 90s or early 00s from memory.

Can’t recall what it was called. Good article.
