Waking up in Geelong

I’m not sure what it is about my local area, but it seems to attract religious flyers in my mailbox, if these flyers are anything to go by.

I took a look at the first one and I instantly thought “Church of Scientology”:

Have you or your family or friend suffered from psychotropic drugs? Birth defects, withdrawal, Heart Attacks…

Who else do you think of when you read of an objection to psychiatry? (Tom Cruise doesn’t count)

When you look up the Citizens Committee on Human Rights as mentioned on the flyer, my suspicions were confirmed (my emphasis).

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) (In Australia Citizens Committee on Human Rights Inc)is a non-profit, public benefit organization dedicated to investigating and exposing psychiatric violations of human rights. It also ensures that criminal acts within the psychiatric industry are reported to the proper authorities and acted upon. CCHR was founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and the internationally acclaimed author, Dr. Thomas Szasz, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the State University of New York, Syracuse.

Of course, the Church of Scientology has other things to concern about other than the evils of psychiatry, such as revitalising the traditional church fete. Just look at what they have to offer… $10 haircuts! Cheap massages! Beauty treatments and style advice! Personal training sessions!

The first “Way to Happiness Day” scored a mention on 3AW but it appears they are now a regular event at the Church of Scientology in Melbourne, if the non-so-recent flyer I received is anything to go by.

Unfortunately I missed out on my $10 haircut, but I still get the excitement of:

Combat crime in the community!
Help look after local environment!
Get tips on personal lifestyle!

Since when has mainstream Christianity offered all that?
