So after a month long hiatus, I’m back from Europe. In that time I passed through six countries, ten cities, three rail gauges and 15 rail operators – but how many photos did I take?
The answer is 19,856.
In the month time I also travelled 8,898 kilometres by train as the map above shows – I started in Frankfurt Germany, then heading to Vienna in Austria, Budapest in Hungary, Brasov and Bucharest in Romania, Kiev in the Ukraine, and finally the cities of Sochi, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow in Russia.
For comparison the Ghan is 2,979 kilometres, the Indian Pacific is 4,352 kilometres, and the Trans-Siberian Railway is 9,289 kilometres.
Other than uploading the photos to Flickr, a spin-off blog detailing my adventures is still to come.
An update
My spin-off blog is titled “Euro Gunzel – An Australian railfan in Europe“.
As for the photos…
So, about a photo per 2 km? That’s a lot over a sustained period of travel!
I’d have to run the numbers myself, but as I spent a number of days exploring the cities along the way, that statistic would actually be quite different. In all about a week of the trip was spent travelling on trains.
I left the train in each of the cities mentioned for at least a day – my stays in St Petersburg and Moscow were four days each. The longest single train journey was 45 hours between Sochi and St Petersburg in Russia, with my other train journeys being a 24 hours at most.
When will your holiday photos be on flickr?
I’ve already sorted out my photos into groups by topic and I’m midway through geotagging them – once that is complete, I can start editing and uploading them.
